Sam E. Mansour M.D., M.Sc., F.R.C.S.(C.), F.A.C.S.

Dr. Sam Mansour brings extensive experience and expertise to his role as Medical Director of the Virginia Retina Center, where he specializes in the management of patients with vitreoretinal disorders.

Dr. Mansour received both his M.D. and M.Sc. (Neuroscience) degrees from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. During his graduate studies, he was awarded two prestigious and competitive honors: the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and the McMaster University Scholarship (1982–1984). He completed his internship in comprehensive medicine at the University of Western Ontario, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Toronto.

In 1991, Dr. Mansour was awarded the E.A. Baker Fellowship (1991–1992), which supported his transition to the United States for advanced subspecialty training. He completed his fellowship in vitreoretinal and laser eye surgery at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco under the mentorship of world-renowned vitreoretinal surgeon Dr. Everett Ai.

Following his fellowship, Dr. Mansour was appointed Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford University and served as Director of the Retina Service and Associate Chief of the Division of Ophthalmology at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC), a major teaching affiliate of Stanford. In 2003, he joined the faculty at George Washington University as Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology.

Over the past 20 years, Dr. Mansour has been deeply involved in both basic science and clinical research in retinal diseases. He has presented his research at numerous national and international conferences, including those held by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.

His research contributions include publications in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Retina, Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and the New England Journal of Medicine. He has also authored multiple chapters in medical and ophthalmology textbooks.

Dr. Mansour continues to serve as an active instructor for George Washington University medical students and ophthalmology residents. Since completing his fellowship, he has regularly taught courses through the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Mansour is also an active member of the American Society of Retinal Surgeons and the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology.
