Marena Patronas, M.D.
Dr. Marena Patronas specializes in diseases of the retina and vitreous. Her clinical interests focus on diagnosing and treating complex retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, retinal vascular disease, and macular degeneration. She is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Before joining Virginia Retina Center, Dr. Patronas served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She was actively involved in medical education, working closely with ophthalmology residents and medical students. During her time there, she was the certified ophthalmologist for the multicenter EDIC (Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications) trial, a continuation of the landmark DCCT (Diabetes Control and Complications Trial). She also participated in several clinical trials exploring the effects of chemotherapeutic agents on the eye and retina.
Dr. Patronas earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and her Doctor of Medicine degree from Georgetown University. She completed a transitional year internship at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Queens, NY, followed by an ophthalmology residency at St. Vincent Catholic Medical Center–Manhattan, affiliated with New York Medical College. She went on to complete a prestigious fellowship in vitreo-retinal surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Dr. Patronas has previously practiced in Ohio with Retina Associates in Cleveland and the Retina Group of Columbus, gaining broad experience in both academic and private practice settings.
The Virginia Retina Center is proud to have Dr. Patronas as an Associate Physician and Surgeon. She currently sees patients at both the Leesburg and Warrenton offices, where she provides a full range of advanced vitreoretinal services.
