Alexandre Gauthier, M.D.

Dr. Alexandre Gauthier is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in medical and surgical diseases of the retina. He brings a unique background in both medicine and computer science, along with years of clinical experience across multiple states, to his role at Virginia Retina Center.

Dr. Gauthier earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from George Washington University, where he received the Curtis E. McCalip Scholarship and was selected as the graduation speaker for the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

He went on to earn his Doctorate in Medicine from George Washington University School of Medicine, graduating in the top quartile of his class. He then completed a year of general surgery training at Stanford Hospital before returning to George Washington University for his ophthalmology residency.

Following residency, Dr. Gauthier completed a medical and surgical retina fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Bert M. Glaser at the National Retina Institute (NRI).

After the fellowship, he served as the solo retinal specialist for a large multispecialty medical group in Palm Beach, Florida. In 2018, Dr. Gauthier and his family returned home to the Washington, D.C. area, where he has since provided retinal care across Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania in multispecialty clinical settings.

Dr. Gauthier has presented his clinical research at respected conferences such as the International Society of Retinal Lasers and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. His work on VEGF levels in diabetic macular edema was published in the Journal of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.

His clinical interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, and diseases of the choroid.

A native of Northern Virginia, Dr. Gauthier lives in the area with his wife and children. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, hiking, cooking, reading biographies, and running.
